Today
Silicone Specialists
Today, we are specialists in silicone rubber. During the late 1940s, commercializing technologies developed during WWII captured the imagination of entrepreneurs. Reiss Manufacturing. pursued such a strategy with two transformative polymers - silicone rubber and plastics. While our diverse plastics operations, which structural foam molded, for example, AT&T fiber optic cable boxes and Bose speakers, have been sold, Reiss Manufacturing continues to innovate and grow within the silicone rubber industry.
1940s
C. Reiss Coal Co. & Reiss Steamship
C. Reiss Coal Co. (1880-1986), Sheboygan, WI, grew to be an important shipping concern on the Great Lakes. C. Reiss Coal was purchased by Koch Carbon, Inc., Wichita, KS, in 1986. Family reunions, where hundreds gather, are still held in Sheboygan.
1930s
R-Way Furniture
Northern Furniture Co., Sheboygan, WI was acquired and, in part, re-branded as R-Way Furniture Co. The company pursued growth in residential and commercial furniture sub-segments until being sold in the 1960s. Even today, vintage R-Way furniture, including pieces by guest designer Eero Saarinen, can be purchased on e-commerce sites, including eBay.
1920s
Portfolio of Investments
Reiss Securities, which continues to operate today, was formed in the 1920’s to make outside investments
1896
International Tailoring Co.
Jacob Lawrence ("JL") Reiss (1874-1955) founded International Tailoring Co. (“ITC”), predecessor to Reiss Manufacturing. ITC, tailors to the trade, helped industrialize the tailoring industry. Before off-the-rack retailers, families visited local tailors for formal clothing. Tailors took measurements by day and sewed at night. JL’s innovation was to incentivize tailors across the country to send ITC their measurements. ITC then manufactured the suits in its modern factories in New York City, Chicago and San Francisco and mailed them directly to customers. Through efficiencies of scale, ITC provided customers a wide selection of materials and patterns, dependable quality and efficient delivery. ITC’s clothing proved highly popular and its factories supported our troops during WWI & WWII by mass producing woolen coats and uniforms.
